After progressing through the main story a little, players will be able to unlock the "Ambush Interrupted" side quest in the Hijiyama area of Iga.

Completing this and the next few Ibuki missions will eventually lead them to the "Putting Down Roots" side quest, at the end of which, they'll have the option to choose the "I want more than friendship." option and trigger a romantic encounter between Yasuke and the Ronin.

Lady Oichi (Yasuke Romance)

After finishing the "The Wheel Unmasked" main story mission, players will be able to start the "The Wheel Turns" side quest by reading Lady Oichi's letter at the hideout.

In contrast, Yasuke and Naoe are completely separate and both are important to the story. If players have been regularly flirting with Rin throughout these three quests, they'll eventually have the option to say "I would like to kiss you.", and doing so will lead to an intimate moment between Rin and Yasuke.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ release date has almost arrived, and people are extremely excited about it.

That means these queer romances are specifically catered to each character. The icon for this one is the same as the one used for regular flirting, though the outcome is very much in keeping with all of the other romantic options in Assassins Creed Shadows.

Players first meet Hori Hidemasa in the Otsu area of Omi and can speak with him to trigger the "The Betrayers" side quest.

What do you think about it? Sadly, however, there's no reward for triggering romantic encounters, nor any kind of long-term benefit to doing so beyond the initial romantic scene.

Gennojo (Naoe Romance)

Players will be able to trigger the "Sake and Swords" side quest in Yamashiro after they're done with the "Lost Honor" main story mission.

The game will let players switch between the two and see the game’s world through different eyes while exploring various romantic options as well. "A chance to really get close to people, get to know people, all sorts of different relationships for Naoe and Yasuke to explore."

Davies also promises what sounds more like flings—"lighter romances".

Based on this interview, JorRaptor likens the relationships in Shadows to Odyssey more than Valhalla, which makes sense given that the two share a development team.

We don't know much about who will be romanceable or how that will look compared to previous titles, but we can at least expect deeper friendships, more in-depth romances, queer stories, and quick affairs while we're slitting templar throats.

Assassin's Creed Shadows launches on November 15 later this year, so we'll find out more for ourselves soon enough.

However, after the game's official release in March 2025, the protagonist's trait was labeled "historically inaccurate," as Yasuke is based on the real story of the only African and first non-Japanese samurai, especially regarding his sexuality, which received backlash on Twitter / X, Reddit and YouTube, among other platforms, as some gamers called it a DEI character, deeming him too "woke."

Rumors about Assassin's Creed: Shadows protagonist Yasuke being LGBTQ+ started on May 22nd, 2024, as shared by the X page @TPPNewsNetwork, which wrote "Ubisoft Appears To Confirm ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Protagonists Yasuke And Naoe Are LGBTQ+." The post (seen below) amassed more than 1.5 million views and 4,000 likes in a year.


On July 18th, 2024, X user @Grummz posted one of the earliest viral mentions of Yasuke as a "gay Black samurai" while commenting on a news article related to same-sex romance options in AC Shadows.

This leads to another side quest called "The Leaf Turns", which sees Naoe retrieving Koshiro's toolbox for him.

This is not the first Assassin’s Creed game that offers same-sex relationships; apart from Odyssey, even Valhalla had similar options.

    In Odyssey and Valhalla, you essentially played the same character but were able to pick their gender at the start—Ubisoft even made female Eivor and Kassandra the canon choices. Completing it will unlock "Honor Among Thieves", which will lead to another new side quest called "Stolen Hearts".
