How Elvis Shows America's Struggle With Sexuality
Elvis Presley’s legacy is tied to hordes of screaming fans as much as his musical ability.
By pushing against societal gender norms, he encouraged the female audience to look inward, becoming the physical manifestation of their secret desires. Montez was apparently a pen pal and agony aunt to both Elvis, Brando, and some other Hollywood stars over the years.
And one of Brando's letters to Montez detailed his worry for Elvis in February 1969.
Brando wrote to Montez that "it looked like Elvis really didn't feel like talking to anyone".
This letter came after claims that Elvis had been savagely attacked by unknown assailants - suspected gang members who attempted to kidnap him.
The couple got married the next year, in 1967, in a short ceremony that ran about eight minutes. Charles Gruenberg, who wrote extensively about Elvis for the New York Post in 1956, reported on how the crowd responded to the King: “A girl about 14 screamed as if she’d been suddenly scalded.
