Right in town, The R3 Hotel is party central whenever there’s a big event going on, and pretty damn fun even when there isn’t! These are just a few of the many amazing places in this very food and wine-centric county.
WHAT TO DO
Nature
The Russian River is, of course, the main draw here.
Vacation rentals, too, are a winning option, and you can find everything from a little cabin in the woods to a grand getaway overlooking the river at Russian River Vacation Homes.
Where to Eat
You’ll definitely want to eat at Boon Eat + Drink for an eclectic American menu and BROT for creative German food – both the creations of Luedtke, and a tribute to her talents as both chef and entrepreneur.
And at Equality Vines, you can sample wines from some of the area’s best vineyards, with a portion of the sales supporting such organizations as Lambda Legal Defense, Puertas Abiertas, and LGBTQ Connection. Whether you're glamping in a cozy cabin or lounging in a chic boutique hotel, this town is all about laid-back luxury.
Autocamp is the lodging of choice for Guerneville’s increasing hipster crowd, with a row of Airstream trailers overlooking seasonal Hulbert Creek.
Boon Hotel + Spa is another great choice, founded (with her ex-wife) by local Crista Luedtke, who’s responsible for much of Guerneville’s recent revival.
When in the woods, you find yourself just not able to put the words together to describe the raw palpable beauty.
Where to Soar
Later in the day, we traded the forest floor for the treetops with a visit to Sonoma Zipline Adventures. We don’t think there is any bad time to visit as locals said the weather is about the same year round.
The vibe is friendly, flirty, and always inclusive—whether you’re there for a weekend fling, a romantic escape, or just some quality time with your chosen family.
Guerneville – See You Soon
I have heard lots about Guerneville for decades from friends that have visited the destination from out of state, from San Francisco and Sacramento, and we all saw it on HBO’s Looking.
In Petaluma, try Tortilla Real for super-fresh Mexican food, in Healdsburg, visit Valette for eponymous chef Dustin Valette’s culinary magic, and in Sebastopol, Blue Ridge Kitchen has an eclectic menu including their famous “drunken fried chicken” – need we say more? If you feel like typing a note on an old-fashioned typewriter, you can do so on the store's pristine unit available for customers to use.
Among the many queer-owned businesses is Equality Wines, which serves a small collection of hyperlocal wines, most of which were bottled in Sonoma County.
Cofounders Matt Grove and Jim Obergefell call Equality Wines a "wine portfolio dedicated to equality for all people." A portion of the proceeds from all sales go toward initiatives that support reproductive rights, access to education, gay rights, and more.
Sonoma County Pride reports Sonoma County is the second “gayest” metropolitan area in the nation, with 7.63 same-sex couples per 1,000 households, behind San Francisco with 12.4. Stroll along one of the town’s beaches, and you’ll probably want to get out there yourself. We were also there one week before Lazy Bear Week 2025 when the bars, restaurants, and entertainment are all hopped up on big bear energy.
You used to wake up naked as a jay bird here as the resort was clothing optional for all adults, yes, women, too, not just the gay boys, but is now a must-wear-clothes, but still adults only.
Check out the Highland’s “A Little History” page for more history like:
In 1979, the resort was declining when Bill and Steve bought it and gave it new life.
Yes, we did reach speeds up to 40 mph and we were looking down over 250 feet to the ground. This cozy Russian River town is a longtime LGBTQ+ haven, where the indulgence of wine country meets rustic charm, and where every visitor is greeted with a smile and a cocktail.
Guerneville in Sonoma County’s Russian River is the West Coast’s favorite LGBTQ+ playground.
Flying into San Francisco, renting a car, driving a couple of hours through some of the most beautiful, green, curvy roads in the nation.
Breakfast by the fire pit, cozy private cabins with cross breezes, a massive heated pool open until 8 PM each night, all enchantingly surrounded by majestic redwoods that made you feel like you were in a whole new world.
Where to Breathe
Morning wa the perfect time to head to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve.
One of them, Steven Harrison, was visiting with friends to enjoy the nearby Russian River, a popular swimming destination during the hot summer months.
"Guerneville is becoming to San Francisco what Palm Springs is to Los Angeles," Harrison told me. We succeeded. The two queer bars in town are Rainbow Cattle Company and R3 Hotel, if you want to see more of the alphabet fam.
