Beacham added that the IBA released a statement on July 31 criticizing both boxers and appears to have brought up the issue as part of its dispute with the IOC.

“These athletes competed many times before for many years,” Adams added. Khelif has even opened up about the difficulties of breaking into a sport traditionally seen as one for boys.

The controversy was sparked in part due to a 2023 decision from the International Boxing Association (IBA) barring Khelif from the world championships after it claimed she failed an unspecified gender eligibility test.

As Greg Beacham of The Associated Press reported, the IBA has since been mired in controversy and been stripped of its governing power in the sport.

“The IOC is in charge of boxing in Paris because it has revoked the Olympic status of the IBA following years of governance problems, a lack of financial transparency and many perceived instances of corruption in judging and refereeing.”

Several prominent figures seized on the accusation to criticize Khelif, accusing her of being transgender and the Olympics of promoting unfair competition.

Imane Khelif ‘Overcame Obstacles’ as Female Boxer in Algeria

Khelif has long been open about growing up as a girl in Algeria, telling Unicef that she faced “obstacles” in reaching the top of her sport.

“Imane recalls how at 16 she managed to excel in football in her rural village in Tiaret in western Algeria despite football not being seen as a game fit for girls,” the organization noted in a story published in March 2024.

The nature of the test has not been made public but IBA President Umar Kremlev told Russian news agency Tass that a DNA test showed that Khelif had XY chromosomes. Many are taking note of how fast misinformation can get spread. But even if she were not, she would still be a woman in sport, and it would still be wonderful for her to be competing, and her victory would still be a valid, beautiful victory that she obviously trained very, very hard for.

Some people have taken this as a moment to learn about the complexities of chromosomes and gender. And so I want to make sure that when we’re talking about this, that we’re not…reinforcing, unintentionally, this idea that trans women don’t belong in sport.”

The conversation around Khelif should reinforce the idea that all women belong in sports, as Oluo stated.

That includes women with masculine appearances, women with XY chromosomes, and yes — trans women.

The report went on to note that Khelif faced more roadblocks after taking up boxing.

In a recent video posted to her Instagram, the Black, queer activist took aim at the inherent racism in the bigotry aimed at Khelif. “The governing body then disqualified Khelif only after Khelif defeated Russian boxer Azalia Amineva during the tournament.”

Olympic, Algerian Officials Confirm Imane Khelif’s Gender

Several officials have independently confirmed that Khelif is a woman.

Paul’s opinion didn’t change, after all.

New York Times bestselling author Ijeoma Oluo put it very eloquently about the need to fight for trans women in sports. Transgender inclusion has had no negative effect on gender parity at the Olympics, according to GLAAD and InterACT. She needed to travel to the next village to train, but lacked bus fare.

“She was unable to ask her father who, besides being away working in the Sahara desert as a welder, did not approve of boxing for girls,” the site noted, adding that Imane sold scrap metal and her mother sold couscous to raise bus fare.

Initial Disqualification Comes Under Scrutiny

Some have cast doubt on the initial ruling from the IBA that disqualified Khelif from the 2023 competition.

Fact check on Algerian fighter Imane Khelif, DSDs, biology and Olympic boxing

Despite outcries from anti-trans celebrities and politicians, the International Olympic Committee confirmed Imane Khelif is eligible to compete in women's boxing at the Paris Games.

Khelif went viral on social media after winning her opening bout Thursday against Italy's Angela Carini, who stopped fighting after 46 seconds.

The Washington Post reported IBA president claimed they were disqualified over finding XY chromosomes.

The IOC said the gender and age for the athletes is based on their passports.

The Paris Games is the first in history to reach gender parity. She noted the “Black and African women and non-white women who find themselves…put in these positions to defend their womanhood, often because their facial features and body composition deviate from white supremacist norms of femininity.”

She also ended in a zinger about trans inclusion.

“There’s a lot of people talking about trying to make this point that Imane Khelif is cisgender, and therefore this pushback against her, this harassment of her, is wrong,” Oluo said.

Both of these instances are true but there’s one thing that hasn’t been a consistent enough narrative: Trans women still belong in sports.

No matter what side of the fence you fall in, it’s vital to note that all of the hatred aimed at Khelif was rooted in transphobia (and racism, which will be touched on later in this editorial) and people need to pay attention to that.

YouTuber and podcaster Logan Paul initially stated on Twitter that “This is the purest form of evil unfolding before your eyes…

“A man was allowed to beat up a woman on a global stage, crushing her life’s dream while fighting for her deceased father…

“This delusion must end”.

He then doubled back on his words with a follow-up post stating “OOPSIES.” He wrote:

“I might be guilty of spreading misinformation along with the entirety of this app…

“Although she’s been previously disqualified for failing a ‘gender test’ and has XY chromosomes, some sources say Imane Khelif was born a biological woman”.

Some have been praising Paul because he admitted he was wrong but too many people are missing the last sentence of the post.

“I stand by my sentiment that biological men should not compete against biological women in any sport and if you disagree you’re a sick fuck”.

The “biological men” Paul is referring to in this instance (since I highly doubt he knows the difference between “cis” and “trans”) are trans women.

It’s interesting to note that the anti-trans hate is unusual considering the fact that she’s a cisgender woman.

Many Twitter users who spread this misinformation took issue with Khelif being disqualified from the 2023 International Boxing Association (IBA) after she failed an unspecified eligibility test midway through the bracket.

"The IOC is saddened by the abuse that the two athletes are currently receiving."

Fact check: Imane Khelif is a woman

Khelif is a woman, who is not transgender, nor identifies as intersex, according to GLAAD and InterACT.

Khelif reportedly has differences of sexual development, known as DSDs, the organizations said in a Fact Sheet released Friday.
