18 Office Specter Is the First Canon Queer Disney-Pixar Character
Lena Waithe Voiced Office Specter in Onward
By now, the jokes about Disney's first gay character are endless, but Officer Specter is truly the first openly LGBTQ+ character in a Disney film. Even his murder of Mufasa is a much more muted affair than in the 1994 version, and the new Scar seems to be going through the motions of usurpation rather than, say, actually savoring his triumph.
The scene makes a big change in LGBTQ+ representation, as Disney films reach broad audiences worldwide. Most importantly, he falls in love with Sarabi, despite the fact that she doesn’t seem inclined to give him the time of day. In the face of discrimination from lawmakers who don’t think a young boy should be able to use the bathroom he wants to and from school boards who ban curriculum centering on Queer stories, finding even the smallest ways to be seen and heard is vital.
Hahn notes that, in lion prides, there typically is only one male because he's killed off the previous king and any rivals, including cubs. The story revolves around Luz Noceda, a Dominican-American girl who ends up in the Demon Realm.
Gravity Falls: Dipper & Wendy Were Both Queer-Coded
Disney's Gravity Falls featured several queer characters, but even more seemed to be queer-coded — including two fan-favorite protagonists.
There, Luz makes a small family, becomes a witch, and befriends many magical beings.
In the last few years, Disney has featured its first lesbian kiss, its first gay protagonist, and a couple of amazing queer personalities. As such, it should be no surprise that Jafar is queer-coded.

Beyond the not-so-subtle symbolism of all his power being located in a magic phallus (i.e.
It’s easier to put him away, to forego any sense of identification with or enjoyment of his presence. It’s all a bit heavy-handed and unconvincing, and it’s doubly so in Mufasa. And though I wasn’t familiar with the concept of Queer coding or the criticisms of Disney’s villains at the time, I adored playing these roles. Unfortunately, the movie was banned in several countries or censored.
Also, like other villains on this list (specifically Jafar and Ratigan), Facilier can’t help but grip his powerful cane/phallic source of power melodramatically.
Ratigan (The Great Mouse Detective)
The criminal overlord Ratigan plots to overthrow the Queen and make himself the ruler of Mousedom. In the same way, it's satisfying to see Ethan get a happy ending with the boy of his dreams.
As far as Kim Possible fans are concerned, Shego really had her eyes on Kim, and not just because of her villainous obligations.

20 Disney Characters Confirmed (Or Speculated) To Be Queer
As one of the top companies in its field, fans, critics, and the public look to Disney for leadership, examine the themes in its movies, and praise or criticize the company for how it reflects the world.
And like Ratcliffe, Captain Hook is also a man of the sea.
From the curls of his waxed mustache to his iconic hook, nothing about the Captain is straight. As these queer villains show, very often it’s sweetly good to be bitterly bad.
There are many sins that can be laid at the feet of the live-action remakes that Disney seems intent on forcing upon us every year, but arguably the worst, in my mind at least, is the systematic de-queering of so many of the classic villains.

The Jasper to my Horace in “101 Dalmatians KIDS” was one of my closest childhood friends and has also grown up to realize their trans and Queer identity.
And being cast in these roles was almost never a surprise. I have gone on to play iconic Queer roles like Emory in “The Boys in the Band,” and even played King Arthur in a bright-blue glitter beard in “Spamalot.” Queer coded Disney villains are a major part of my confidence in my identity.
In 2023, the Queer community must flourish.
Interestingly, Ursula is based on the late great drag queen Divine of Pink Flamingos fame, who was once described by People magazine as “The Drag Queen of the Century.”
Many of Ursula's fashion sensibilities were lifted directly from Divine, such as her eyelashes, love of extravagant jewelry, and even her figure. A year later, the film shows Diazo and Ethan dating.
